Cricket should be an olympic sport (Discussion)

With the Olympics in full swing, the idea of cricket being part of future Olympic Games should be raised and debated.

Cricket is was last an olympic sport in 1900 but has not appeared since and apparently is currently not in major consideration to be added to future Olympic Games. While I believe the Summer Olympics are already a huge spectacle with too many sports, I think Cricket should be the next event added.

It is a popular enough sport in numerous countries that there would be healthy competition and lots of nations trying to qualify. Also, cricket is a true sport that requires true athleticism and skill (more than can be said for some of the current obscure olympic events!). Adding cricket would also increase the popularity of the olympics in some nations where it has less of a following.

I think the best Cricket nations in the world should be rewarded with a chance to compete to be Olympic champions.

I cannot agree more and I am glad that someone finally brought this subject up to the forefront. If so called sports like baseball and softball are in, cricket should be ahead. There are also a few other newer sports that have been created but should not be in. Cricket is a great sport and needs to have its place among the rest.

I think Cricket would help diversify the Olympics. Thriving nations have outstanding cricket competitors and that skill is sometimes lost on the current Olympic front. What countries do you think would be the top competitors if this did become an Olympic sport?

Well, I agree, but only in the sense that introducing it would do no great harm at least ! Otherwise, I’m not so enthusiastic. Yes, I am Indian and I’m a Cricket fan, but after many disappointing Olympic games, I’m only now beginning to realize that Indians play other sports too and not just participate ! India saw three heroes in three different sports after many years. Let the new heroes celebrate for a while before we dump them for our favourite cricketers :-)

takes too long! and it’s a gentleman’s game

whats the fun unless its a 5 day test match with plenty of evening tea to go :)

i say, preserve cricket the way it was – it’s not a mere game, rather a way of life :P

and say no to one dayers and twenty-twenties :P

Avinash when was the last time you saw a test match?

I am a big follower of cricket and endorse the fact that Test match is the real format
cricket. But Lets face it…..cricket is no more a “Gentleman’s” game……and 20-20 is the
    future.

Why not try 20-20 at the Olympics. Men and Women.
